Our View: After Riedewald signs, £56,000-a-week Palace man must be tied down next

SAKA, ANTONY AND 10 PREMIER LEAGUE STARS HEADING TO THEIR FIRST WORLD CUP

On Wednesday, Crystal Palace announced some brilliant news as Jairo Riedewald committed his future to the club until 2024.

While that was a great move from Steve Parish and co, plenty more work needs to be done as 16 others players find themselves out of contract in June according to Transfermarkt.

They are: Christian Benteke, Mamadou Sakho, James McCarthy, Nathaniel Clyne, Tyrick Mitchell, Patrick van Aanholt, Andros Townsend, Martin Kelly, Joel Ward, Scott Dann, Gary Cahill, Wayne Hennessey, Connor Wickham, Stephen Henderson and Jeffrey Schlupp.

Of all these names – and there are a lot – the latter must be tied down next.

Schlupp has emerged as arguably one of Roy Hodgson’s most important players, having been nothing more than a dependable squad player under Sam Allardyce.

The £56,000-a-week man offers dynamism and energy in numerous positions. Schlupp also provides a quality option at centre-midfield, left-midfield or even at left-back.

We wouldn’t be surprised if other clubs plan to have a chat with the Ghana international very soon, so the Eagles need to tie him down quickly.

It would be a disaster for Palace to lose the ex-Leicester flyer this summer, to say the least.

While Parish, Dougie Freedman and Hodgson can rightly pat themselves on the back for securing Riedewald’s future, they must now turn their attentions to Schlupp as soon as possible.
