Before the summer, we didn’t want Crystal Palace to make any loan signings – it’s the very definition of a Catch 22.
The player is either a disappointment, and ends up being a waste of a loan.
On the other hand, they are an absolute hit, but end up being too expensive, or their parent club doesn’t want to sell them due to their fine form.
In Conor Gallagher, we have a prime example of why us here at We Are Palace didn’t want any loanees – we’ve fallen in love with him.
It happened with Ruben Loftus-Cheek. It also happened with Mamadou Sakho, a player we eventually spent big on in a deal worth £26m.
With each passing game, Gallagher seems to be enjoying his time in south London more and more.
However, some comments he made in August are starting to make us doubtful over a permanent stay.
What did Conor Gallagher say?
When speaking about Chelsea’s Mason Mount, the Independent quote Gallagher as saying: “If I copy that pathway I’ll be buzzing. That’s definitely what I want.
“Fair play to him and the other youngsters who have done it through Chelsea and England. I hope I can do that.”
Worried? You probably should be, in truth.
If he keeps these numbers up, Chelsea will be left in no doubt about how good a player they have on their hands.
That, and Gallagher’s desire to make it at Stamford Bridge, could leave us in a sticky situation if we try to pursue a permanent deal.
For now, let’s just enjoy the midfield phenomenon while he’s here.
Whatever happens in the future remains to be seen.
