Next season marks the 165th anniversary of Crystal Palace, allegedly the oldest football club in England having been founded back in 1861.
Quite often in football, clubs make a tweak to their badge to commemorate a landmark campaign. For example, Middlesbrough released a brand new crest at the start of this season to celebrate their 150th anniversary.
As Crystal Palace prepare to celebrate their 165th anniversary, a hint has emerged on the official CPFC shop website regarding a potential new badge.
Crystal Palace could tweak club crest to a shield design as products emerge
The chance of a UEFA Conference League final in Leipzig is becoming a very real prospect after the 3-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk, and Crystal Palace are releasing merchandise for fans to buy.
A few items in the club’s European collection online strangely have the Crystal Palace crest embedded inside a shield, as you can see below.
Interestingly, this is exactly what Swansea did to their badge to mark their 100th anniversary back in the 2012/13 campaign – placing their iconic swan inside a shield.
It remains to be seen if Crystal Palace – who want Andoni Iraola – do genuinely go down this route and change the badge slightly, and it is worth noting that no official release from Selhurst Park has emerged regarding a tweak to the crest.
However, the fact as many as seven products in the European collection on Crystal Palace’s official website contain the shield badge, it is certainly worth keeping an eye on – in our view at least.
The badge was last changed in June 2022 – amending the year 1905 to 1861 after it was discovered the Eagles might be older than first thought.
A more drastic change took place in 2013 after our promotion to the Premier League, moving away from an Eagle sitting on the ball and instead encompassing the ball into the old Crystal Palace, with the eagle sitting atop the building instead – while the layout of the wording also changed.
