Crystal Palace Sporting Director Dougie Freedman has a chance to repeat the great 2021 summer transfer window in 2024.

It saw the club sign some top players.

So, how has Dougie Freedman have the chance to replicate the 2021 summer transfer window at Crystal Palace? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

In June 2021, many Palace fans were somewhat worried as 11 players left the club. All 11 of these players had come to the end of their contracts and the Eagles did not offer them an extension.

At the time, many high profile players on big wages left like Andros Townsend and Patrick Van Aanholt. You can understand why people were worried but the club worked well and saw these older players leave.

In the same summer, an abundance of top talent joined Palace. Michael Olise, Marc Guehi, Joachim Andersen and Odsonne Edouard all joined. It was a Dougie Freedman masterclass as he signed top players and also players who have the potential to play at the highest level.

In June 2024, a similar situation could happen. There are eight players who’s contracts expire in the summer and we could see Palace have a similar transfer window to the one they had in 2021.

If the Eagles do not extend the contracts of the players who only have until June 2024 remaining, then Freedman could no doubt work his magic again.

The players who’s contracts expire are all ones which you could see departing in the summer as well. James Tomkins, Nathan Ferguson, Remi Matthews and Jairo Riedewald all have limited game time at the club. Meanwhile Nathaniel Clyne and Joel Ward are both in their mid 30s.

It could be a case of allowing the old guard to leave on a free transfer in order to free up wages and makes sure that we can sign some exciting talent.

Freedman has done a great job since becoming the Sporting Director and has signed some top players during his time at the club.

His good work has not gone unnoticed, with Manchester United being linked with a move for him over recent weeks.

Hopefully the Eagles can replicate the 2021 summer transfer window as it was one of the most exciting we have seen since promotion a decade ago.
