Crystal Palace welcome Bournemouth to Selhurst Park this Saturday when Premier League football returns.

The Eagles and the Cherries are separated by just two points after both enjoying strong starts to the season under Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola respectively.

It will undoubtedly be a tough game for the Eagles, but an announcement from the Premier League provides a good omen for Crystal Palace ahead of the game.

Jarred Gillett to oversee Crystal Palace vs Bournemouth after saving Dean Henderson in the FA Cup final

Jarred Gillett has been selected as the referee for this fixture – the same man who was on VAR (Video Assistant Referee) duty in our FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

The Australian can be considered something of a lucky charm for the Eagles, as he was the man who ultimately decided that Dean Henderson had not committed a handball offence on that memorable day at Wembley – despite the Crystal Palace No.1 quite clearly swatting the ball away from Erling Haaland with his hand outside the box.

The official line from Gillett that day was: “The direction in which Erling Haaland was going made it possible, but not an obvious goal scoring opportunity.”

While we will be eternally grateful for that decision, it was a bizarre one nonetheless – with Haaland only running away from goal because Henderson sent the ball in that direction with his hand.

Not only that, but Gillett was the referee for our 4-0 win over Manchester United in May 2024, even making history as he became the first official to wear RefCam during a Premier League clash.

Crystal Palace, who remain keen on Conor Gallagher, have won two and drawn one of the five games overseen by the 38-year-old.

Gillett did admittedly fail to overturn a penalty for Manchester City in that FA Cup final – Tyrick Mitchell appeared to get a touch on the ball before Bernardo Silva went to ground – but that was a decision initially made by the main man Stuart Attwell rather than those in the VAR booth, which he stuck to.

Bournemouth fans have a problem with Jarred Gillett

While Gillett is a popular man at Crystal Palace – who like Charlie Cresswell – after that FA Cup final decision, Bournemouth fans are not too fond of him.

There is even a three-page thread on a Bournemouth fan forum which dates back to April 2024, where a number of supporters have expressed their dissatisfaction at how he has previously officiated their matches.

That’s not to say the presence of Gillett will definitely ensure a positive result for Crystal Palace on Saturday, but the signs are undoubtedly positive.
