Mark Clattenburg has exclusively spoken to We Are Palace about the incident involving Christantus Uche during Crystal Palace 0-0 Sunderland on Saturday.
The Nigeria international saw a shot saved by Robin Roefs just minutes into his debut for Crystal Palace, following a £17m move from Getafe on transfer deadline day.
However, the effort was immediately followed by Uche rolling around in agony after being caught by Wilson Isidor – a challenge which was not officially checked by the VAR.
Clattenburg has now told We Are Palace that he agrees with the verdict.
Exclusive: Mark Clattenburg explains why Wilson Isidor was not punished for challenge on Christantus Uche
The man who oversaw 297 Premier League games throughout his refereeing career believes there was not enough contact from the Sunderland No.18 for Tom Bramall to award a penalty.
Clattenburg tells We Are Palace: “I would have been surprised if the penalty was awarded. Crystal Palace wanted a penalty, but I am not sure the contact was sufficient to award a penalty when two players were challenging for the ball in a split second.”

Those in the VAR booth presumably had a few looks at the moment, but it did not reach the point where a recommendation was made for Bramall to have a check for himself on the pitchside monitor.
What Oliver Glasner said about Wilson Isidor challenge on Christantus Uche
Oliver Glasner was adamant that his side should have been awarded a penalty after Isidor left his studs on Uche – who is viewed as a No.10 internally at Selhurst Park.
The Austrian told BBC Sport: “In the end we have to accept the draw, if you don’t score you don’t lose, but I think at the end, we had to get a penalty. It was a clear penalty but we have to accept it.
“The VAR must have told the referee that the Sunderland player didn’t touch him but for me when I see the pictures it looks like he touches him.”

Despite Glasner – who overlooked Romain Esse again – insisting it was a penalty, the decision is a tough one for the officials, in fairness.
As Clattenburg states, there was a split second between the shot and the impact of Isidor’s foot, making it hard to tell whether it was just a natural collision after Uche pulled the trigger.
However, after a woeful decision which robbed Eberechi Eze of a goal against Chelsea earlier this season, it would have been nice for us to get the rub of the green on this occasion.
