Crystal Palace were on the losing side once again on Saturday as Liverpool held on to win 1-0.

Oliver Glasner’s winless run with Crystal Palace has now reached seven after the Eagles were beaten 1-0 by league leaders Liverpool.

The Eagles struggled in the first half with Adam Wharton continuing to struggle in midfield amid his injury concerns.

However, like in the 0-0 draw against Manchester United, Crystal Palace were far better in the second half.

In the end, some excellent chances fell to Eberechi Eze and Eddie Nketiah’s feet – but Liverpool held on to secure the three points.

Selhurst Park will also feel robbed over one penalty decision which went against Crystal Palace.

Why Crystal Palace were not awarded a penalty vs Liverpool

In the 71st minute SE25 erupted when Marc Guehi was dragged to ground by Virgil van Djik – with the Dutchman holding the Crystal Palace captain by the arm to prevent him from latching on to Trevoh Chalobah’s pass.

As seen above there was a good argument for Crystal Palace being handed a penalty here – but ultimately after a VAR check, the Eagles were not awarded a spot-kick.

The reasoning for this has been given by Premier League Match Centre on X, with VAR deeming the challenge not to be sustained holding and also had no impact on the play.

This explanation does make sense, however it is a decision which plenty will disagree with and it does highlight the need for a true definition of what sustained holding means.

Glasner and TNT pundit Joe Cole are among those to explain their bafflement at the decision.

Oliver Glasner and Arne Slot disagree on penalty situation

The decision is a controversial one, with Joe Cole on commentary for TNT Sports confidently giving his verdict moments after.

“I think that’s a nailed on penalty”, he explained.

After the game, Glasner also shared his reaction: “We should get a penalty, Marc Guehi was held with two hands.”

This was not the view of Arne Slot though as the Liverpool boss shut down conversation around it being a penalty after he was shown the clip post-game on TNT Sports.

“Yeah, but the ball is going to the goalkeeper. He would not have a goal there. But probably that would have gone to VAR if he had given this one, he wouldn’t have changed it, the VAR, but for me, this is not a penalty because he will never get the ball.”
