Crystal Palace assistant manager Paddy McCarthy has just been interviewed for a role as the head coach at a League One club.

That is according to the Oxford Mail.

So, what’s the latest on Crystal Palace coach Paddy McCarthy? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

McCarthy was the head coach of the Crystal Palace U21s until last season when Roy Hodgson took over from Patrick Vieira.

Since then, the Irishman, who played for the Eagles, has been the assistant manager of the first team and he also had the role as interim manager for a short period whilst Palace were looking for a Vieira replacement.

Now, according to the Oxford Mail, McCarthy has been interviewed for the Oxford United head coach role, following the departure of Liam Manning.

It is not known how well the interview went with the League One club yet, but what is very interesting is the fact that the report suggests that Palace had rejected approaches earlier in the year from Oxford for McCarthy when they were looking to replace Karl Robinson.

The 40 year-old Palace assistant manager is no doubt somewhat of a legend at the club whilst he played for the Eagles.

The centre-back made 151 appearances for the South London club, scoring six goals and now he looks to be a promising manager.

McCarthy led the U21s to promotion into the Premier League 2 during his time as manager of the academy side.

Now, with him being touted by a side in League One, there is a big decision for both McCarthy and the Eagles should he be wanted for the job.

With Hodgson only contracted until the end of this season, chairman Steve Parish will be looking for a new manager. With the way McCarthy has been drafted into the first team, it looks like he could definitely be seen as a potential candidate. It is no doubt great to have McCarthy involved with the first team as there are a lot of young talents in the senior squad that he can help based on his experiences, like 19 year-old Matheus Franca, who impressed on his debut.

Meanwhile, a job in the EFL could be the perfect opportunity for the Irishman to showcase his managerial abilities at a slightly lower level. No doubt the Eagles will be hoping he stays at the club.
