For Crystal Palace, the past few months have been bizarre and have seen the entire narrative around the club shift, now one player has been praised.
Oliver Glasner‘s arrival played a huge part in the turnaround last season for Crystal Palace, with the club finishing the season seven unbeaten and with six wins.
This saw the Eagles rise up to 10th, which is a club best in the Premier League era and now hopes are very high about next season.
But it isn’t just the manager who has turned the club around, his presence has allowed the squad to flourish.
Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze have both been phenomenal under Glasner, as have Daniel Munoz, Adam Wharton and Jean-Philippe Mateta. Now Bryan Robson has lauded one.
Bryan Robson raves about Crystal Palace ace Adam Wharton
Manchester United and England legend Bryan Robson has been writing an article for the Daily Mail about England ahead of this summer’s Euros.
In doing so, he had some particular praise for Wharton after the 20-year-old was handed his first cap for England.
“When I saw Adam Wharton play for Crystal Palace against Liverpool towards the end of the season, I thought, ‘Wow!’”, Robson explained to begin with.
“Liverpool were going for it in that game, they needed to win, but Palace were terrific and Wharton was at the heart of everything positive.”
Continuing, Wharton heaped praise onto the midfield gem for his England debut.
“As he showed for England against Bosnia on Monday, what I like about him is he understands that the excellence of midfield is in its simplicity. If a forward pass is on, play it. If your defence needs help, cover them. Keep your discipline and help your team-mates.
“I am biased but midfield is the most important part of the game bar scoring goals, yet so many people overcomplicate it. What I like about Wharton is he knows his role. He is constantly looking around to assess the landscape of the game so he can sense danger or sense an opportunity.”
Wharton should be one of three in midfield for England
This summer for England, Gareth Southgate has some huge decisions to make regarding his Three Lions team, and the midfield could be his biggest call to make.
Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Wharton and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all options in central midfield, but realistically if England wants a chance of going all the way, only three can be real options in the pivot.
Rice starts and alongside him, only Mainoo and Wharton are suited, with Bellingham becoming more of a number 10 and then Trent being a right-back.
So Wharton should absolutely be heading to Germany this summer and needs to be one of the three main pivot options in midfield, whether that means he starts or not.
