Much has been made of Marc Guehi’s decision to write a religious message on his captain’s armband during the past two Crystal Palace games.

Last weekend against Newcastle, Marc Guehi donned the rainbow armband in support of LGBTQ+ inclusion within football.

It is a brilliant initiative to tackle to issue of homophobia within football at all levels – however, the FA took issue with Guehi.

This was because the Crystal Palace captain modified his armband, writing “I love Jesus”, which landed him in hot water with the FA due to the International Football Association Board, in which it’s Law 4 states: “Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images.”

Guehi escaped with a mere warning, however against Ipswich Town he donned another message. Guehi wrote “Jesus loves you” on his armband at Portman Road.

After the game, Oliver Glasner supported Guehi too, saying: “We respect every single player, especially Marc, who is our captain. He is a great guy, very humble and we shouldn’t make it bigger than it is, he is very respectful to everyone in the club.”

Crystal Palace pair Eberechi Eze and Maxence Lacroix react

Amid a seeming wave of support toward Guehi from his teammates, Maxence Lacroix posted on Instagram, writing: “I love Jesus and he loves you!”

Under this post, Jean-Philippe Mateta was among those to respond as he added: “Amen”.

Additionally, Eberechi Eze posted, writing “Love you Jesus”, as part of his message post-game.
