The remarkable end to last season at Crystal Palace – which yielded six wins and a draw from the final seven Premier League outings – has been starkly contrasted by the start to this term.

How Oliver Glasner fared after five games at VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt
Judging by the 50-year-old’s start to seasons in the Bundesliga with VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, perhaps more people should have expected Crystal Palace to begin this term slowly.
Back in the 2020/21 campaign, Glasner failed to guide VfL Wolfsburg to a win in the opening four Bundesliga outings.
However, the man from Schärding eventually secured fourth spot in the Bundesliga, ensuring VfL Wolfsburg qualified for the UEFA Champions League that season.
Glasner oversaw an even worse start to the 2021/22 campaign at Eintracht Frankfurt, winning just one of the opening ten Bundesliga matches that term, while also crashing out of the DFB-Pokal to Waldhof Mannheim, a third division outfit, in the first round.
However, Eintracht Frankfurt remarkably ended up winning the UEFA Europa League at the end of that season, having overcome their poor start with six Bundesliga wins from a possible seven across November and December of 2021.
Therefore, nobody should be jumping to any conclusions at Selhurst Park just yet – Glasner is clearly capable of navigating his sides through difficult spells in spectacular fashion.
Crystal Palace can still have a special season
Look at it this way.
We were utterly abysmal for 25 games last season under Hodgson until Glasner oversaw seven wins and three draws from his 13 matches in charge, eventually finishing 11 points away from seventh and a UEFA Conference League spot.
Therefore, Crystal Palace still have plenty of time to achieve something special this season.
