For Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, goals have become a regular this of late, now he’s explained his celebration.

Under Oliver Glasner, the main benefactor has been Jean-Philippe Mateta as he’s established himself as the starting number nine.

While starting every game, he’s grabbed three goals in five which will have Crystal Palace reconsidering their summer priorities.

Quite miraculously, Mateta has outperformed Erling Haaland in four of nine key areas a striker should thrive in, including having a better shot conversion.

Now, as we get used to seeing his celebrations more recently, he’s explained the reasoning behind why he does what he does.

Here’s what he said…

Jean-Philippe Mateta explains his celebrations

Against Forest, Mateta’s celebration came into full focus and was a major talking point after the game.

Now, in an interview with The Athletic, he has explained the inspiration behind his corner flag kick.

It’s been his celebration since he made his first appearances for Chateauroux in the French third division, and now he’s explained that the inspiration comes from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was the player he admired most as a kid.

He explained: “He was tall, he could run, hold the ball, and had great technique,” Mateta says. “He scored incredible goals. I saw him kick a corner flag, so maybe it’s because of him?”

As we see the celebration more and more recently, for Mateta the aim is for it to become a regular fixture as he believes he can become a league-leading scorer.

“If I get given my chance, I can be one of the best goalscorers in the Premier League,” he declared, unprompted.

He also highlighted that he dreams of Champions League football and appearing for the French national team. Both things would likely mean his celebration happening regularly.

Mateta is looking like the striker Glasner needs at Crystal Palace

Ahead of the upcoming summer window, a striker is among the positions that seem to be receiving the most links.

However, with Mateta becoming a reliable performer for Glasner, this might lessen the need for this position to be a priority.

The big Frenchman looks perfect for Glasner up front, causing chaos and pressing up front.

But an Odsonne Edouard replacement still looks likely, but this could be a striker who supplements Mateta, rather than replaces.
