Jean-Philippe Mateta takes new £16m signing under his wing as footage from Crystal Palace training emerges

It was an odd time for the likes of Christantus Uche and Jaydee Canvot to join Crystal Palace.

The Nigerian and the Frenchman moved to Selhurst Park from Getafe and Toulouse on transfer deadline day in deals worth £17m and £16m respectively.

However, an international break immediately followed, so the pair have not exactly experienced a normal start to life at Crystal Palace.

Oliver Glasner now has his players back at Copers Cope, and Canvot already seems to be getting along well with Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The £16m signing from Toulouse is only 19 and has never played outside of his native France before, so he might have had some nerves.

If there were any worries, however, Mateta appears to have helped Canvot shake them off.

New training footage posted by Crystal Palace shows the striker walking out onto the pitches with his arm around the teenager, laughing and joking with his fellow countryman.

Mateta – who is ready to sign a new contract – could be heard shouting “nineteen” and then “twenty two” before pointing at another new arrival in Yeremy Pino, which seems to be a fairly random reference to their ages.

The Crystal Palace No.14 was also filmed jogging alongside Canvot in the warm up, so he does seem to be making a concerted effort to help the defender settle in, which is nice to see.

Versatility increases Jaydee Canvot’s chances of debuting against Sunderland

It would be a surprise if Glasner handed the France U21 international an immediate debut in defence against Sunderland on Saturday, seeing as Chris Richards, Maxence Lacroix and Marc Guehi are all fit.

However, Canvot can also play in central midfield, where Crystal Palace are currently a man down after Adam Wharton suffered an injury in the 3-0 win at Villa Park last time out.

Therefore, the man born in Argenteuil could be called upon, but Uche is probably the most likely to be handed a debut, if anybody – the Nigeria international can even play as a striker as well as in several midfield areas.

However, Glasner may simply opt to hand the reliable Jefferson Lerma a start, as the Colombia international impressed after replacing Wharton against Aston Villa.
