Newcastle United could attempt to poach Dougie Freedman from Crystal Palace if Dan Ashworth is lured to Manchester United, according to reports.
Dougie Freedman has been linked with a move to Manchester United but the Crystal Palace sporting director could now be on his way to St James’ Park.
When Sir Jim Ratcliffe completes his 25 per cent takeover of the Old Trafford club, whenever that may be, it seems the 71-year-old billionaire is keen on recruiting the best in class.
As a result of this, Dan Ashworth, Newcastle’s newest sporting director, could well be lured to Old Trafford according to Alan Nixon’s Patreon, which would lead to the Geordie side potentially targeting Freedman.
Freedman’s impact at Palace
Rio Ferdinand questioned United’s decision to be targeting Freedman and claimed he wasn’t the most glamorous name on his Vibe With Five podcast but that’s because the Palace director’s work has gone under the radar.
Freedman was crucial to the signings of Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi have all been brought into the club for less than £50 million combined.
It is very feasible that if the South London club were to decide to sell the trio they could easily bring in close to £200 million, the job that Freedman, who used to start for the Eagles before his retirement in 2017, has certainly gone under the radar.
Palace may need a replacement
Were the Eagles to lose Freedman it would be a huge blow for the South London club and the Eagles would have to explore the market to source a replacement.
The report from Nixon goes on to say that the Geordie club would prefer Bournemouth director Richard Hughes so that Eddie Howe can be reunited with his former director who he was close with at the South Coast club.
Palace have discovered some bargains in the transfer market with Joachim Anderson joining the club two seasons ago despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
Losing Freedman would be a huge blow for the South London club.
