The relationship between Crystal Palace and Newcastle is stretched at best right now after the negotiations for Marc Guehi last summer.
Steve Parish left Newcastle fuming during the summer with the demands for Marc Guehi being increased continually.
However, it has since been revealed Parish was annoyed at Newcastle for their attempt to poach Dougie Freedman during last season in order to replace Dan Ashworth who is now the sporting director of Manchester United.
These situations combined to leave the relationship between the two clubs strained at best – now it has been suggested that the dealings between the two clubs may be far from concluded.
What Newcastle are saying about Marc Guehi right now
The transfer rumours taking Marc Guehi to Newcastle over the summer were among the hottest in the Premier League.
Crystal Palace ended up retaining Guehi after selling Joachim Andersen to Fulham, with the England international now wearing the captain’s armband for Oliver Glasner’s team.
Guehi only cost Crystal Palace £18m and therefore rejecting a bid of around £70m was a risky move by Freedman and Parish.
With Guehi still not signing a new contract though, the relief of retaining him may be short-lived, but rumours of a cut-price January deal are believed to be wide of the mark.
According to The Athletic, these reports have caused some puzzlement among Newcastle insiders who do not believe this to be the case or possible.
This could be due to Crystal Palace’s unwillingness to deal with Newcastle, meanwhile, Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Guehi.
Crystal Palace have a ready-made replacement
While losing Guehi would be far from ideal, Crystal Palace have a long-term solution currently breaking through the team.
Mofe Jemide is among the best talents currently at Selhurst Park and aged 17, he is already proving to be excellent against senior opposition in the EFL Trophy.
Jemide outperformed Rob Holding in a recent game against Gillingham and he appears to be one player absolutely capable of having a role in the first team for the Eagles.
He will be turning 18 in a matter of weeks, and therefore if 2025 sees Guehi exit then it could be that Jemide is handed the chance to push up into the first-team.
