Well, West Ham’s involvement in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday is the reason for this clash – which was never supposed to be broadcast on TV in the first place – kicking off on a Sunday.
The Premier League have allowed the east Londoners – and also Aston Villa – the opportunity to play on Sunday rather than Saturday, to allow enough recovery and travel time for both teams.
Crystal Palace wrote in an official statement: “The move is necessary due to the Hammers’ participation in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals the preceding Thursday.”
The game is not being shown on TV as it was supposed to be a standard 3pm Saturday kick-off.
These are never shown in England due to the 3pm blackout rule.
Sky Sports and TNT Sports select the games they want to broadcast months before they actually take place, so neither outlet are able to make a last minute decision to screen Crystal Palace vs West Ham on Sunday.
