Why could VAR not officially check Eberechi Eze’s goal for Crystal Palace against Brentford? Many are wondering after watching the moment on Sky Sports.
The Crystal Palace No.10 struck a remarkable freekick in off the upright from roughly 30 yards, although Sam Barrott decided to intervene after spotting a coming together between Nathan Collins and Will Hughes.
However, replays showed that it was actually the Brentford No.22 who threw himself into the Crystal Palace No.19 as Eberechi Eze took the shot.
So, why could VAR not overturn the mistake? Let’s take a look…
What Sam Barrott did to make Eberechi Eze’s goal uncheckable
To the annoyance of many Crystal Palace fans, Eze’s goal was made uncheckable due to the fact Barrott blew his whistle before the ball actually crossed the line.
VAR could – therefore – not actually check whether the goal was wrongly disallowed, as technically, there was no goal to be checked in the eyes of the officials, given the fact a foul was deemed to have been committed beforehand.
To make matters worse, Brentford scored almost immediately after this incident through Bryan Mbeumo to put the Bees 1-0 up.

Just minutes into a new campaign, and the standard of officiating is just as bad as it was last season, it seems.
What is the point of having VAR in the first place if a referee does something which makes the technology redundant?
Oliver Glasner understandably looked bemused on the sideline after Barrott’s dreadful decision, with the Austrian afforded the benefit of watching immediate replays on the bench.

Hopefully, we get an incorrect decision in our favour at some point to balance things out – although in truth, it would be better if the officials simply got their act together.
