Oliver Glasner had to oversee a market that was volatile and ever-changing for the Eagles as they lost key stars.
Michael Olise, Joachim Andersen, Jordan Ayew and Sam Johnstone were among those to leave Selhurst Park for new challenges.
In their place came plenty of new options as Chadi Riad, Daichi Kamada, Ismaila Sarr, Eddie Nketiah, Maxence Lacroix, Trevoh Chalobah and Matt Turner moved to Copers Cope.
While it underlined a transformation of the team at Crystal Palace, there was one area left exposed.
That was at left wing-back, where the side looked to land a new option, but missed out before the window closed.
Oliver Glasner wanted a left wing-back signing at Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace boss Glasner revealed in the summer that he wanted to sign another option for the left wing-back role.
Tyrick Mitchell has been the mainstay option since making his way through the youth ranks, but beyond him, there are few replacements.
Ryan Sessegnon was training at Crystal Palace earlier in the summer but he eventually made his return to Fulham.
Late in the window, Glasner said on a move for a left wing-back: “We are working on it.”
That transfer never materialised though, leaving the squad slightly thin in that area, though there are still ways around that.
Jeffrey Schlupp could be the left wing-back option for Crystal Palace
While Glasner has often had to tweak his side to fit players into certain positions, it wouldn’t be a step too far to suggest Jeffrey Schlupp could be the left wing-back option at Crystal Palace this season.
Mitchell is still the first-choice in that position, but given the amount of minutes he has played, it wouldn’t go amiss to rotate him on occasion.
Schlupp has played at both left midfield and left-back over 190 times in his career, though the bulk of those came earlier on.
His move to central midfield is a more recent development, but given the squad depth there, it will be a struggle for the 31-year-old to break into the team there.
With more of a rotational role expected from the Ghanaian international, it wouldn’t be too farfetched for him to fill in on the left until a longer-term option is secured.
