Crystal Palace would have surely liked to see more from Matheus Franca during his loan spell at Vasco da Gama.
The Brazilian has struggled to even get on the pitch since the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A restarted in January, playing just 62 minutes in the league having been left on the bench seven times – on four occasions, he was not even named in the squad.
However, the CONMEBOL Sudamericana clash against Audax Italiano offered Matheus Franca a chance to remind everybody why Crystal Palace spent £25m to sign him from Flamengo back in August 2023 – an opportunity he seized with both hands.
Does Matheus Franca have a future at Crystal Palace? 🇧🇷
Matheus Franca nets superb goal to inspire Vasco da Gama comeback
The 22-year-old was named on the bench for this CONMEBOL Sudamericana clash, but was introduced at the interval as Vasco da Gama found themselves a goal down.
Franca helped Vasco da Gama find an equaliser in the 64th minute, and just seven minutes later, netted a fantastic goal himself to fire the Brazilian side to a 2-1 win.
The Crystal Palace loanee dropped deep to receive the ball, pulled off a tidy piece of skill to shift the ball and play a one-two, before then smartly allowing the ball to roll across his body.
It created an angle for Franca – who Vasco da Gama are treating carefully after his injury nightmares – to smash a shot across goal and into the bottom corner, which he executed to perfection.
Vasco Connect – a fan page focused on the Brazilian side – even wrote on X (previously known as Twitter): “He came on and was the best for Vasco in the second half. He was rewarded with this beautiful goal, the one that turned the game around for the Giant.”
Of course, the £25m man still has a lot of work to do if he is to make a name for himself back at Crystal Palace, where competition for places is a lot fiercer than it was when he left.
Since Franca was loaned to Vasco da Gama last August, the Eagles have signed Jorgen Strand Larsen, Brennan Johnson and Evann Guessand.
Even Christantus Uche – who is fed up at Crystal Palace – was left out of the squad for the UEFA Conference League knockout phase despite impressing in the first half of the season.
Who do YOU want as the next Crystal Palace boss? 🤔
Hopefully, this moment of magic from Franca is a sign that he is beginning to realise his vast potential, and can return to SE25 to justify his price tag in the near future.
