We Are Palace have received information on how those inside Crystal Palace feel after Adam Wharton and Tyrick Mitchell failed to make the England squad.

Despite being watched by Thomas Tuchel in recent weeks as the Eagles stretched their unbeaten run to a club-record 19 games, the duo have been overlooked for upcoming fixtures against Wales and Latvia.

Graeme Bailey – Chief Correspondent for We Are Palace – can now confirm that there is “some surprise” about the decisions involving Tyrick Mitchell and Adam Wharton at Crystal Palace.

Exclusive: Tyrick Mitchell was strongly considered by Thomas Tuchel for an England recall

The Crystal Palace No.3 last played for England in March 2022 during a win over the Ivory Coast, the second of his two caps for the Three Lions.

Wharton only has one cap – which came against Bosnia and Herzegovina in May 2024.

We Are Palace understand Mitchell – who Brentford released – was being considered for a recall by Tuchel, but the German did not see enough to offer the defender the chance to win a third cap for England.

Bailey said: “I am told that Tuchel has been watching Palace closely, and that is no shock as they have numerous options, such as Dean Henderson and Marc Guehi. I am led to believe the reason they were watching of late was to check on Wharton and Mitchell.

“Clearly they were not convinced by what they have seen, which is strange given how they have played.

“For me I can’t believe Palace don’t have four players in this squad. There is some surprise in their camp, but it is not their place to react – they are just delighted with how the players are doing.”

Guehi and Henderson have been included.

What Thomas Tuchel has said about Adam Wharton

Leaving Mitchell out appears to be a tactical decision, but Tuchel has suggested the exclusion of Wharton – who shone against Dynamo Kyiv – could actually be down to fitness.

The Crystal Palace No.20 missed the last round of international fixtures and the 0-0 draw against Sunderland due to an adductor injury he only recently recovered from.

Discussing the matter, Tuchel put Wharton in the same bracket as the injured Cole Palmer, saying: “Adam Wharton deserves to be with us… there are players who deserve to be here.

“Cole Palmer is injured who is a special player. It will always be like this.”

Wharton will hopefully manage to shake off his niggling groin issues for good in the near future, and be able to balance international football with his club commitments.
