Many Crystal Palace fans are unsure what to make of Rayo Vallecano ahead of the UEFA Conference League final.
Our previous battles for silverware of late have come against familiar foes in Manchester City and Liverpool at Wembley, although the Spanish outfit are more of an unknown quantity for plenty of Crystal Palace supporters – who may have never even watched Rayo Vallecano play.
If you are someone who falls into that category, fear not – as Rayo Vallecano fan and expert @adripato22 has now told We Are Palace all about the “humble, hardworking” club from Puente de Vallecas.
Was that our GREATEST night at Selhurst Park? 🤔

Exclusive: Crystal Palace told to expect “high pressing” and “constant intensity” from Rayo Vallecano
Focusing on both the emotional aspect and the tactical side of Rayo Vallecano, @adripato22 said: “Rayo isn’t just any club. We’re a neighbourhood team, made up of humble, hardworking people who truly live and breathe our colours. Our fans never walk away – it doesn’t matter if we’re chasing Europe or fighting relegation, our stadium always pushes us the same way. There’s something very special between our supporters and our players, and you can really feel it in the way we compete.
“If we’re honest, we’re more used to battling relegation or fighting for promotion in the second division than dreaming about European titles. That’s exactly why reaching a final means everything to us – it’s a dream come true. And of course, now that we’re here, we want to win it.”
Sounds a lot like a certain Crystal Palace, some might say.
@adripato22 continued: “Under Inigo Perez, the team has taken a huge step forward – high pressing, constant intensity and real personality on the ball. But beyond the system, what matters most is that every single player believes in the idea and gives everything on the pitch.
“At the back, (Florian) Lejeune is leading the defence at an incredible level, with Pathe Ciss and (Nobel) Mendy providing great solidity. Out wide, (Andrei) Ratiu and (Pep) Chavarria are relentless – always pushing into the opposition half without ever switching off defensively.
“In midfield, Unai Lopez and Oscar Valentin are the perfect balance of quality and hard work, while Pedro Diaz brings energy and (Gerard) Gumbau keeps things controlled when needed.
“Up front, (Jorge) De Frutos is having the best season of his career, Isi Palazon still has that magic that can change a game in a single moment, and Alemao keeps showing up in the biggest moments.”
Ironically, Crystal Palace may hire Andoni Iraola to replace Oliver Glasner, who Perez previously assisted as manager of Rayo Vallecano before the Spaniard moved to Bournemouth in 2023.
Who do YOU want as the next Crystal Palace boss? 🤔
There is plenty to admire about Rayo Vallecano, who almost seem to be a Spanish version of Crystal Palace in many respects.
Two blue-collar clubs, with passionate fanbases and a spirited squad of players find themselves in a European final, signalling a refreshing change from your typical showpiece events of this ilk. It is sure to be a fantastic spectacle in Leipzig later this month – and may the best side win.
