Crystal Palace were held to a draw at Villa Park on Saturday evening despite leading twice against the Villians.

Oliver Glasner would have taken a point from the game, but watching his Crystal Palace side drop a lead twice would have made it more painful than anticipated.

The Eagles opened the scoring in just four minutes through Senegal international Ismaila Sarr, who showed his class for Crystal Palace. Villa came back to draw level though in the 36th minute through Ollie Watkins.

However, the lead was then restored in added time at the end of the first half with Sarr setting up Justin Devenny for his first Crystal Palace goal.

Ross Barkley snatched the potential win in the 77th minute, with the draw seeing the Eagles remain in 18th place.

Afterwards, Glasner gave an honest review of his goalscoring young midfielder.

Oliver Glasner shared honest verdict on Justin Devenny

Devenny has been a starter in the last two games and has not let Glasner down with his performances.

Despite this, Eberechi Eze’s return next week will likely relegate Devenny back to the bench.

This would be no slight on Devenny, but rather an admission that he is not quite ready just yet. Speaking with media after the game, Glasner made this clear.

“He’s an unbelievable footballer, very technical”, Glasner began by praising the 21-year-old.

“He understands the game, finds space, and can score goals.”

Despite the praise, Glasner then made an honest admission: “He is young. We will keep him a little bit back so that he can develop in the right way.”

Integrating Devenny slowly is the right way to do it and so we find no fault with this decision.

Speaking post-game, Devenny was in buoyant form as he discussed how he grabbed his big opportunity with both hands.

“Honestly, I was just given an opportunity. That’s what it starts with, just an opportunity and then you’ve got to grab it with both hands”, he told Palace TV.

Continuing, Devenny did admit that he still had a lot of work to do.

“I feel like I have done that, but for me, this is not where I want to end. This is where I want to just keep going.”
