Crystal Palace have now made a U-turn as Oliver Glasner changes his mind about one player.
The Eagles have already waved goodbye to James Tomkins, Jairo Riedewald and Nathan Ferguson after the trio’s contracts expired at Selhurst Park – while Michael Olise also left for Bayern Munich in a £50.8m deal.
Another seemed set to depart after Crystal Palace put Odsonne Edouard up for sale – according to the South London Press – with the Eagles looking for £20m.
Now – however – there has been a change of heart…
Crystal Palace make Odsonne Edouard U-turn
A story from Football Insider claims that Crystal Palace now want to keep Odsonne Edouard.
It is said that Jean-Philippe Mateta remains Oliver Glasner’s No.1 choice to lead the attack.
However, the Austrian is now planning to keep Edouard, who started and scored in Saturday’s 6-3 win over Crawley Town.
The Crystal Palace No.22 – who was signed in a £14m deal from Celtic back in September 2021 – only has 12 months remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park, which is presumably why there were initially plans to sell him.
However, a lack of movement on the recruitment front in terms of bringing a new striker to SE25 seems to have ignited a U-turn on that stance, with Edouard now expected to stay in south London.
Eagles should still keep an open mind over a sale
In our view, Crystal Palace should remain open minded about selling Edouard if a new striker can be signed this summer.
The 26-year-old clearly possesses talent, but has simply struggled to assert himself in the Premier League, unlike at Celtic, where he performed like a world beater with 60 goals in just 104 Scottish Premiership appearances.
Edouard has only netted 18 goals in 93 Premier League appearances since joining Crystal Palace, and a more physical frontman like Mateta seems better suited to Glasner’s style, as he can win headers and hold the ball up for the two No.10s to get involved.
