Gareth Southgate has now explained why he wasn’t able to call Michael Olise up into the England squad for the European Championships.

Much to everyone’s surprise, Gareth Southgate named four of Oliver Glasner‘s team in his provisional Euro 2024 squad, a number which is beaten by no other side.

Crystal Palace have Dean Henderson, Marc Guehi, Adam Wharton and Eberechi Eze all called up for England, and despite this, there were even more who fans thought worthy, such as Tyrick Mitchell.

After the announcement, Paul Merson himself actually insisted that there should’ve been a fifth Palace name in the form of Michael Olise.

But now, Southgate has revealed why this simply wasn’t possible.

Why Michael Olise wasn’t called up to England squad by Gareth Southgate

Despite choosing four Eagles players, Southgate has admitted he wanted to make it five. As quoted by The Mirror on Wednesday.

Southgate answered the question many were wondering and explained exactly why he wasn’t able to call Olise up into the Euros squad for England, despite France snubbing him from their squad.

“He would have to have a transfer of association. That process would take quite a while. He is obviously a very good player, he hasn’t made their squad, they might be taking him to the Olympics, I don’t know.

“He is a player we should have an interest in because he is a very good player but there is no way you could do all of that in time for the Euros.‌”

Southgate can say he didn’t have time, but Olise hasn’t exactly come out of nowhere and has been a known talent who’s been incredible all season long so there should’ve been some forward planning.

There’s an argument that Olise would be England’s number-one choice on the right side, and while he’s missing out here, there is still a possibility he will eventually.

Olise was born in London but has been representing France at U21 level. Having not made his senior debut, however, he is still yet to be committed to a nation.

Southgate could’ve replicated Oliver Glasner’s devastating pair

Calling up Olise alongside Eze could’ve seen the devastating pair reunite for the Three Lions which would’ve been a scary prospect for any opponent.

Completely hypothetically, putting Olise and Eze next to a Phil Foden might be the best trio the Premier League has to offer and could be the future for Southgate.

Olise’s incredible season is likely to see him get a big-money move over the summer, with Manchester United circling and when this happens, an international call-up will be imminent considering the ‘big club bias’ which exists.

So with that being said, the September internationals are likely to see Olise finally declare for one country or the other.
