Adam Wharton has struggled to hit the heights he experienced in the first half of 2024 at Crystal Palace so far this season.
The Crystal Palace No.20 was the talk of England not long after his £22m move from Blackburn Rovers in January – rapidly becoming a Premier League star and even earning a spot in Gareth Southgate’s UEFA Euro 2024 squad.
Unfortunately, the 20-year-old has struggled to kick on this season, but the Daily Mail have now provided an update on Adam Wharton‘s situation at Selhurst Park…
Adam Wharton update
Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail has now revealed that the Blackburn-born maestro is still playing through the pain barrier, despite Oliver Glasner‘s attempts to manage his minutes this term.
It is said that Wharton first complained about pain to his groin while out in Germany with England for UEFA Euro 2024 – and the injury has continued to trouble him well into the 2024/25 campaign.
Glasner has started his No.20 in all five Premier League games this season regardless, giving him 90 minutes on three occasions, but withdrawing him early in clashes against Brentford and Manchester United.
| Opponent | Minutes |
|---|---|
| Brentford | 74 |
| West Ham United | 90 |
| Chelsea | 90 |
| Leicester City | 90 |
| Manchester United | 45 |
Wharton also played 20 minutes of the 4-0 Carabao Cup win over Norwich City, a game in which he didn’t really need to feature.
Glasner then left the central midfielder out of the next round, a 2-1 win over QPR.
Oliver Glasner needs to give the Crystal Palace No.20 a proper rest
Of course, everyone wants Wharton to start, but there is no point leaving him in the starting XI if we only get to see 50% of what he can really do.
The youngster has by no means performed terribly this season, but set the bar so highly with his efforts last term that the level of expectation has risen quite drastically.

A statistic has also gone viral, which shows that Wharton has been dribbled past more often than any other player in the Premier League this season (13) – suggesting his groin problem is hampering his mobility.
With Cheick Doucoure injured as well, we hope the likes of Will Hughes and Jefferson Lerma can step up to help their teammates.
