Ian Wright has now shared whether he thinks Crystal Palace should have had a penalty in the 4-2 defeat to Manchester City.
Oliver Glasner watched his side go 1-0 up in the 3rd minute after a fine finish from Jean-Philippe Mateta, before a remarkable strike from Kevin De Bruyne made it 1-1 ten minutes later.
However, before Rico Lewis put Manchester City 2-1 ahead in the 47th minute, there was an incident involving Ebere Eze and Josko Gvardiol while the scores were level at 1-1.
The Croatia international shoved the England international to the ground as he waited for Joachim Andersen’s cross to drop, but no penalty was given by Paul Tierney – despite a VAR check.
Now – writing on X – Ian Wright has shared whether he thinks Crystal Palace should have received a penalty against Manchester City…
Ian Wright comments on penalty controversy in Crystal Palace 2-4 Manchester City
Well, the man who made 78 appearances for Crystal Palace thinks Ebere Eze was unlucky not to win a penalty from Gvardiol earlier on Saturday.
Wright called the Manchester City No.24’s challenge a “clumsy” one – comparing it to the foul from Diogo Dalot on Noni Madueke which helped Chelsea fight back against Manchester United on Thursday.
The 60-year-old said: “Dalot was clumsy and was punished, so Gvardiol was clumsy and no pen 🧐”
It was indeed a bit of a foolish decision from the Croatian, and perhaps another outcome might have occurred if Eze made more of the challenge.
Oliver Glasner can take positives
Despite tasting defeat in SE25 today, Oliver Glasner will surely take a number of positives from what he saw from his players.
Crystal Palace arguably could have even gone 2-0 ahead if Adam Wharton did better with his final pass in a promising position, while Jordan Ayew also hit the bar too.

The penalty decision also could have turned out differently on another day.
Nobody could have done anything about De Bruyne’s special strike, and if we can maintain this level of performance against other sides, it should be a solid end to the 2023/24 campaign.
