Crystal Palace have a player of real promise in Jaydee Canvot.

A £16m arrival from Toulouse on transfer deadline day in September, the 19-year-old has only made one appearance for the Eagles so far, but stood out as he helped to inflict defeat on Millwall in the Carabao Cup.

The Crystal Palace No.23 has now showcased his skills in a different position to his usual area in the centre of defence, sending a positive message to Oliver Glasner while on international duty with the France U21 side.

Jaydee Canvot impresses at right-back

The teenager is a centre-back by trade, but has now showcased his ability in a new position.

Canvot was deployed at right-back by Gerald Baticle as Manchester United No.15 Leny Yoro and Nathan Zeze were preferred in the centre, but appeared to look comfortable as Les Bleus defeated Estonia 6-1 in a UEFA Euro U21 qualifying match.

Unfortunately, there are no statistics for the U21 clash available to us, but fan footage shows the Crystal Palace wonderkid displaying silky skills as he drove down the right flank, suggesting that he could handle life in a right wing-back role under Glasner whenever Daniel Munoz may need a rest.

Even if Canvot – who rejected Aston Villa – is not deployed in that area at Crystal Palace, he is sending all the right signs to Glasner considering what the Austrian demands of his central defenders.

As Marc Guehi has proved in several games, Glasner wants his centre-backs to push on and support the attack where possible, so it will please the 51-year-old to see that Canvot is comfortable in the final third.

Jaydee Canvot could potentially bring Marc Guehi departure forward

Glasner told the media that he advised Steve Parish not to sell Guehi to Liverpool as he felt Crystal Palace lacked a competent replacement, even namedropping Canvot as a “fantastic player” albeit not someone capable of replacing the club captain immediately.

The man from Salzburg said: “We buy a 19-year-old (Jaydee Canvot). Fantastic player. About 1,000 minutes in Ligue 1, but selling our captain with about 15,000 minutes in the Premier League, I think we can’t manage it in the short term.”

However, with January the last chance to recoup a fee for Guehi before his contract ends in June, Glasner might end up being open to a sale if Canvot continues to show progress between now and the winter transfer window.
