Jude Bellingham has been talking about Marc Guehi after the pair linked up against Slovakia to save England’s tournament.
England scraped through into the Euro 2024 Last 16, beating Slovakia in extra time thanks to an injury-time Jude Bellingham equaliser and then Harry Kane scoring in extra time.
Bellingham’s goal was particularly excellent, an overhead kick which sent England fans into an eruption of celebration.
Marc Guehi was also involved in the win, assisting Bellingham, while also impressing defensively as he’s quickly emerged into one of England’s most important players.
Now, Bellingham has been talking about his teammate, here’s what he’s said about Crystal Palace’s defender.
Jude Bellingham comments on what Marc Guehi was trying to do
On the latest edition of the England ‘Diary Room’ episodes, Bellingham was the guest and he spent much of the episode raving about Guehi.
He praised him for the assist, but also explained how after the game Guehi was trying to escape the spotlight, not that the superstar from Real Madrid would allow that.
“Look even Marc there, just trying to slip away and that, he’s just like the most humble geezer ever isn’t he? He thinks I’m just going to let him get away with a little handshake after he’s set up the most important goal in my life.
“I’m really big on giving people their flowers, especially when they’ve been as good as he has so far this tournament.
“He’s set up a goal which is so important to us as a team and still, he’s trying to squirm away and get out of there and I’m like ‘Nah, you’re coming with me’.”
Bellingham continued his praise of Guehi’s assist for the equaliser.
“[I] was praying for a flick really, hoping that someone can get something on it. Marc with probably the best flick-on header in England history.
“He will never take any credit for it but I think it’s important that he knows how appreciative I am and the team are of his contribution.”
Finally, Bellingham explained that Guhei is a very mature player who always seems to be experienced beyond his years.
“He’s only a little bit older than me but when you speak to him and when you’re around him you get the idea that he’s 40 and he’s played like three careers.”
Marc Guehi’s stock will have risen much to Crystal Palace’s delight
Prior to the tournament, rumours around Guehi’s exit were amped up as multiple clubs seemed keen on bringing him away from Selhurst Park.
A fee of around £60m was quoted, although with no release clause, Palace could very easily deny him a move and with his performances in the Euros, he probably tacked another £10m onto his value already.
This would bring the asking price up towards what Everton are asking for to sell Jarrad Branthwaite, a player with far less experience and pedigree.
So as things stand, we’d say Palace might end up keeping hold of Guehi this summer simply because he is too valuable with multiple clubs already making centre-back moves.
