Crystal Palace had two players in action on Thursday night as France surprisingly suffered a 2-1 defeat against the Ivory Coast.
The African giants – who had Evann Guessand on their side – pulled off a shock victory in the friendly, which was arranged to prepare both sides for the imminent World Cup.
Maxence Lacroix and Jean-Philippe Mateta were both introduced by Didier Deschamps at the interval in place of Dayot Upamecano and Kylian Mbappe respectively, but there were mixed reviews from French news outlet L’Equipe.
Who do YOU want as the next Crystal Palace boss? 🤔
L’Equipe praise Mateta but question Lacroix after France 1-2 Ivory Coast
Deschamps gave the Crystal Palace duo the second half to show what they can offer ahead of the World Cup.
Mateta was praised for his aerial dominance and industry after replacing Mbappe, with L’Equipe writing: “A combative player who didn’t shy away from defensive work. The striker showed he could also be useful in building attacks, without really managing to create any danger. His heading ability was rarely used by his teammates.”
The Crystal Palace No.14 received a match rating of 4/10 for his performance.

Lacroix also received a 4/10 – although L’Equipe felt his passing was quite “shaky” against the Ivory Coast. They wrote: “Made a very mixed entrance. By pressing high up the pitch, he created space for the Ivory Coast goal, but then he made a good recovery against Diallo (59th minute). His distribution appeared particularly shaky.”
It is worth remembering that this was only Lacroix’s third appearance for France, and he has some fierce competition in the centre of defence. Therefore, the Crystal Palace No.5 can be forgiven for appearing a little “shaky” ahead of the World Cup – which is set to bank millions for the Eagles.
Who is your DREAM signing? ⭐️
Whatever happens at the tournament, training daily alongside the likes of Mbappe, Michael Olise – who Real Madrid want – Ousmane Dembele and others will surely see Mateta and Lacroix return to Selhurst Park as better footballers.
