Crystal Palace should re-sign hat trick scoring star that Hodgson sold in 2020 to solve striker hunt

Crystal Palace were chasing a new number nine in January, but this summer resigning a player sold in 2020 could be the ideal choice.

This summer, it’s likely that Oliver Glasner will renew the interest in signing a new number nine that Crystal Palace had in January.

For weeks in the transfer window, Palace had been linked with several different strikers with Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah seemingly top of the shortlist.

However, with Glasner now the boss, he could prefer a striker fitting the bill of how he plans to play, and this could make the ideal signing, a player that Palace have had before.

Alexander Sorloth was sold by Roy Hodgson in 2020 after managing just one goal in 20 games. But now at Villareal, after a hat trick this weekend, he’s showing signs that he could be the perfect choice for Palace, here’s why.

Crystal Palace should look no further than Alexander Sorloth

While yes Sorloth has been at the club once before and ultimately failed, there are some key reasons to consider him joining once more.

For a start, Sorloth only got the chance to play under Hodgson which as many strikers will tell you, isn’t the ideal situation.

This can be seen by his goal-scoring record outside of Palace. His last two campaigns with Villareal yielded 16 goals in 2022/23 and this season he has 11 already which includes a devastating hat-trick against Granada on Sunday afternoon.

Sorloth also has experience in Germany which is something Glasner may be fond of when searching for his striker this summer as it’s unlikely Jean-Philippe Mateta is that guy for him.

Standing at 6ft 4in, Sorloth is tailor-made for the Premier League and it wouldn’t be surprising for him to return and absolutely boss it.

Should Crystal Palace sign Sorloth again?

Palace need a striker and in Sorloth they’d be getting one desperate to prove himself in the biggest league in the world.

Yes, his first spell was awful but since then, he’s developed as a player and there’s a strong chance that his physical qualities and clear finishing threat – with 116 career goals – could be exactly what Glasner wants to replace Mateta with this summer.

Another positive would be he’d be unlikely to cost a serious amount and Palace could sign him and also strengthen elsewhere which could be attractive to those making the decisions this summer.
