Crystal Palace have confirmed another loan departure in this January transfer window, as defender Kofi Balmer has now joined AFC Wimbledon for the rest of the season.

The 23-year-old spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Port Vale, where he made 16 appearances, and has now moved to League Two.

Balmer joined Crystal Palace in the summer of 2022 from Northern Irish side Larne FC, but is yet to appear for the senior side, having made 24 appearances for Palace’s under-21 team.

Balmer is not the first player to move to AFC Wimbledon this month, as 20-year-old John Kymani-Gordon also completed a loan transfer earlier this month.

AFC Wimbledon have now confirmed this second deal, and the player has expressed his excitement about the move.

“I can’t wait to get started, meet the lads and hopefully have a good run in,” he stated.

“This is a very tightly orientated club. Everyone’s in it together, everyone is going to help you out. If the team was going through a rough time you’d not only have the staff and the players behind you but also the fans. When I came in to speak to the manager the other day I felt wanted.”

Although he is yet to appear for Palace, Balmer did draw praise from former manager Patrick Vieira a year ago.

“He’s got this kind of leadership & maturity – he’s playing like he is 28 or 29. “His calmness as a CB, how comfortable he is on the ball & the way we want to play, means he is spending a lot of time with the team,” Vieira claimed.

It remains to be seen whether the defender will ever get a shot in the Crystal Palace first team. Right now, competition at centre-back is fierce, with Joachim Andersen and Marc Guehi the first-choice options, and given his age, he may not be considered a true hot prospect by the club.

Nevertheless, if he does show promise in his loan at Wimbledon, it could serve both him and Palace well to attract a permanent move in the summer.
