A number of Crystal Palace fans – including myself – are a tad perplexed at the news of Oliver Glasner’s imminent move to Nottingham Forest.
It feels like a sideways step – if not a backwards step considering we have UEFA Europa League football next season, while Nottingham Forest are not in any European competition.
The fact Glasner is practically doubling his salary at the City Ground is surely a leading factor behind the move.
However, as we attempt to dig deeper and find the real reason why the Austrian has made such an odd decision, a comment he uttered back in August 2025 could offer an explanation.
Would Oliver Glasner ruin his Crystal Palace legacy by moving to Nottingham Forest? 🤔
Oliver Glasner may prefer to work under a more bullish operator in Evangelos Marinakis
It is no secret that Glasner felt let down by Steve Parish at times.
The 51-year-old seemingly wanted his boss to be stronger in the market and not sell key players, which he made explicitly clear after Marc Guehi was sold to Manchester City in January.
Also alluding to the sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal in August 2025, Glasner was quoted by the Guardian as saying: “Your heart gets torn out twice in a season, one day before a game. It’s tough to survive. That’s how it feels like right now.
“We feel that we’re being abandoned. There’s no support. Everybody’s disappointed. We’ve been playing with 12 to 13 players for weeks now. On the bench I had just kids. They had never played in a stadium with an atmosphere like this.”
However, when speaking ahead of a 1-1 draw between Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest in August 2025, the man born in Salzburg made a point of mentioning how Marinakis “kept everyone” together.

As quoted by the official CPFC website, Glasner said: “We could see they played a great season last year, finishing in seventh position with Nuno doing a great job with his players. Also, they kept everyone. Of course, it was quite noisy with Morgan Gibbs-White, but he stayed there, and then they added many players especially in the last week.
“We’re facing a very good squad. They are very ambitious.”
Perhaps Glasner simply wanted to work with a more robust operator in Marinakis who is less likely to sell his best players, compared to Parish – who also sold Michael Olise to Bayern Munich while the Austrian was in charge.
Crystal Palace’s fixtures are out for the 2026/27 season! Which game are you most excited for? 🤔
It remains to be seen if the duo can work together – Nottingham Forest even snubbed Glasner in December 2023 due to concerns over his personality – but that comment from August 2025 offers a potential explanation behind this strange career move.
