Why Nottingham Forest snubbed Oliver Glasner in 2023 as former Crystal Palace boss nears shock switch

Oliver Glasner is set for a remarkable move to Nottingham Forest after choosing to leave Crystal Palace.

Steve Parish claimed the Austrian has “things that he wants to do” when explaining why the 51-year-old opted to depart Selhurst Park, despite guiding Crystal Palace to the FA Cup, Community Shield and UEFA Conference League since replacing Roy Hodgson in February 2024.

Incidentally – as the Telegraph claim the former Eintracht Frankfurt boss will replace Vitor Pereira at the City Ground – Glasner could have moved to Nottingham Forest before taking the reins at Crystal Palace.

Would Oliver Glasner ruin his Crystal Palace legacy by moving to Nottingham Forest? 🤔

Nottingham Forest had concerns over Oliver Glasner’s personality

The Athletic have previously stated that Glasner was an option to replace Steve Cooper at Nottingham Forest in December 2023.

However, those at the City Ground were concerned that the man born in Salzburg could clash with the ‘volatile’ Evangelos Marinakis, and Nuno Espirito Santo was hired instead.

Just weeks later, Glasner ended up replacing Hodgson at Crystal Palace, and the rest is history as the Eagles went on to win three trophies under his guidance.

Some could argue that Glasner potentially had his eyes on the vacancies at Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and AC Milan when choosing to leave Selhurst Park, as the move to Nottingham Forest is undoubtedly odd.

They will not be competing in any European competition next season after finishing 16th in the Premier League last season, whereas Crystal Palace have UEFA Europa League football on the schedule.

The Telegraph say both Manchester United and Chelsea had the Austrian on their list of options, but his imminent switch to Nottingham Forest certainly feels like Glasner settling for less.

After all, the position was filled by Pereira when Glasner initially announced he would be leaving Crystal Palace, so it is all quite sudden.

Considering Nottingham Forest pushed to get Crystal Palace kicked out of the UEFA Europa League last summer, some might consider it a betrayal from Glasner to move to the City Ground.

Should the appointment go ahead as now expected, next season’s meeting against Nottingham Forest at Selhurst Park should be some spectacle indeed.
