Crystal Palace saw a historic 19-game unbeaten run come to an end at Everton on Sunday.
Goals from Iliman Ndiaye – once a target for Dougie Freedman – and Jack Grealish signalled a first defeat of the season for Oliver Glasner, but not only that.
The loss sparked an odd response from several high-profile organisations across sport, not just football, with Borussia Dortmund now leaping to defend Crystal Palace from social media jibes.
Borussia Dortmund call for an end to Crystal Palace mockery
For those unaware of the situation, the person in charge of the official Crystal Palace X (previously known as Twitter) account would post “don’t worry, we’ve updated the bio” after each game which passed without defeat, to reflect the amount of unbeaten matches.
Everton were understandably the first to mock that post, before it strangely went viral.
As you can see below, even Domino’s Pizza and Mercedes jumped on the trend – along with the Algeria national team, Sevilla, Bayern Munich, Monaco, Watford and many more.
However, Borussia Dortmund have now had enough.
The German giants posted the same words but in mocking fashion of the trend itself rather than Crystal Palace, writing “dON’t WoRRy, wE’Ve UpDatEd thE BiO” along with a pained-looking emoji.
A quick click onto their account then showed said bio to read: “This trend needs to end.”
Somehow, it all started as a result of Crystal Palace embarking on a memorable 19-game unbeaten run, and the mere fact it turned into a global trend just goes to show how far our success under Glasner is reaching across the planet.
Oliver Glasner could team up with Borussia Dortmund’s rivals
Every Crystal Palace fan is desperate for Glasner to sign a new contract before his deal expires in July.
Despite only arriving in February 2024, the Austrian is arguably already the greatest manager in our history, winning the first major trophy in the club’s existence with that FA Cup glory last season.
However, Glasner dreams of managing Bayern Munich at some stage of his career – according to Alan Nixon.
Vincent Kompany is doing well in that role currently – which could work in our favour if it means Glasner is content to wait in SE25 for the opening to appear – but it does not suggest the man born in Salzburg is planning to manage Crystal Palace for the foreseeable future.
