Crystal Palace youngster Romain Esse was left out of England’s U21s squad for this month’s international break, but injury saw him earn a late call up.
It’s been a testing few weeks for Romain Esse at Crystal Palace, following that nightmare performance against former club Millwall in the Carabao Cup earlier in the season.
Oliver Glasner slammed Esse’s performance against Millwall and rightly so, with the former Lions man completely lacking any energy and effort and then finding himself demoted to the U21s.
But the attacker has reacted well to Glasner’s treatment. Esse scored twice for Crystal Palace’s U21s recently and then earned himself a late call to the Young Lions side.
Lee Carsley called up Esse for the England U21s last week, though the 20-year-old has been an unused substitute in both games, against Moldova and then Andorra on Monday night.

Lee Carsley impressed with Crystal Palace gem Romain Esse
Speaking with The Standard, Young Lions boss Lee Carsley gave his verdict on Esse, and to Glasner’s delight, Carsley praised Esse’s attitude among the squad, saying that the Crystal Palace man is certainly heading in the right direction with regards to his mentality.
Carsley said: “We have to be patient with these young players and understand that they are young. They need time and support. But he’s definitely going in the right direction. He’s got a brilliant attitude.
“I’m very impressed with Romain. It’s not easy to make a move from one club to another. He’s a player that I’ve enjoyed working with. I left him out of the initial squad. But the fact that he got called up, as we needed a player, shows you are never too far away from the squad.”
What Crystal Palace insiders are saying about Romain Esse’s attitude
It’s all looking very positive once again for Esse: he’s in prolific form for the U21s at Selhurst Park and he’s back on the scene with the U21s at international level, too.
Earning praise from Carsley will only serve him well upon his return to Palace this week and Glasner will surely be pleased to know that Esse is doing well, even after being called up by England and not playing.
And Carsley’s comments echo recent reports about Esse’s mentality behind the scenes at Palace. It’s been reported recently that Crystal Palace insiders are pleased with Esse’s attitude after his latest fall out with Glasner.
The same report also adds that Crystal Palace don’t intend on loaning out Esse in January and with his form improving, we could yet see him back in the first-team picture in South London.
