Crystal Palace have enjoyed two games without defeat in the post-Roy Hodgson era, and now one man, in particular, is getting heaps of credit.
Since Roy Hodgson departed Selhurst Park, there’s been a 1-1 draw with Everton followed by a truly dominant 3-0 win over Burnley.
The latter of the results in particular was impressive with the defensive side of things conceding just two shots, but zero on target much to the delight of new boss Oliver Glasner.
This improvement in defence has also coincided with the swap of Sam Johnstone replacing Dean Henderson.
Now it’s been argued that this is no coincidence…
Sam Johnstone’s return to the starting line-up has been huge
Reflecting upon Palace’s 3-0 win over Burnley, journalist Andrew McSteen made the claim that Johnstone replacing Henderson in the starting line-up has made a huge difference.
“The return of Sam Johnstone in the Palace goal, replacing Dean Henderson, has appeared to settle the defence and from watching behind the Holmesdale Road goal and in the media box the difference appears to be the communication with the team.”
This is a bold claim considering Henderson has pulled out some heroic moments in the Eagles’ shirt. But the numbers don’t lie and Palace’s goal shipping has been halted since Johnstone returned to the starting line-up.
With just one conceded to Everton and then none against Burnley, Johnstone won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. He will however need to be on top form once more this weekend, against a Champions League hunting Spurs side.
Jefferson Lerma has also become vital in Palace’s defensive improvements
McSteen then continued his verdict by pointing out another player who has been impressive in the recent defensive improvements.
“But the main reason for the lack of clean sheets in recent months for me has been the loss of Cheick Doucoure, his key work in front of the Palace defenders ensuring that extra layer of security.
“Jefferson Lerma has stepped up to the plate and he was my man of the match on Saturday. The Colombian seemed to be everywhere and has appeared to have recovered fully from his recent injury.”
This was on show to an excellent level last weekend when Lerma put in a wonderful display which saw him win 15 duels against Burnley, locking down the midfield.
