The one-day saga that was Maxwel Cornet to Crystal Palace seems to have reached its final destination, and it’s not good.
On Wednesday night the first reports emerged which pointed towards Crystal Palace interest in Maxwel Cornet.
The Ivory Coast international was said to be an option on a short-term loan move which would have suited Palace perfectly.
Throughout deadline day, the deal took on various twists and turns with it seeming a strong possibility.
A deal was even suggested to have been agreed with West Ham to acquire the 27-year-old winger until the end of the season. However, there was the lingering belief that Roy Hodgson didn’t actually want to sign him.
Now though, the latest update has all but confirmed there will be no deal.
Maxwel Cornet to Crystal Palace shut down
So despite reports of an agreement, West Ham have effectively told the world that Cornet is staying at the London Stadium with their latest move.
With the Hammers playing Bournemouth on Thursday night, David Moyes has named Cornet on the bench.
This practically rules out any chance of Cornet joining Palace with there probably an hour between the game ending and the transfer window closing.
This is a disappointing blow for Palace, given Cornet would’ve been a very decent addition to an already exciting front line.
The chances of a deal always looked slim for Cornet
West Ham were likely never going to let Cornet leave with Pablo Fornals heading to Real Betis as Fabrizio Romano confirmed.
This wasn’t the only exit as Said Benrahma also hit the exit door, with his move to Lyon all but confirmed too.
Losing these two means Cornet is necessary to avoid West Ham struggling for depth and so he was never going to leave.
It seems too late now for a new target to be chosen by Palace but we won’t rule anything out.
