Why Rob Holding has been banished by Oliver Glasner from Crystal Palace squad

After the summer saw Crystal Palace strengthen defensively, Rob Holding has found himself banished.

The Eagles sold Joachim Andersen this summer with Fulham capitalising on his desire for a new contract.

In his absence, Crystal Palace added two, with Maxence Lacroix reuniting with Oliver Glasner on deadline day.

Trevoh Chalobah also arrived on loan, although is currently out injured as Glasner confirmed on Friday.

This has left some names surplus to requirements within the squad, one of which being Rob Holding.

Why Oliver Glasner has banished Rob Holding

Holding’s move from Arsenal to Crystal Palace has been nothing short of a disaster.

Holding cost the club £4m per appearance in his debut campaign due to injuries. This season has not been much better with Glasner excluding him from Crystal Palace training.

After this Holding removed any mention of Crystal Palace from his social media, clearly signifying the end. Glasner also suggested as much during his pre-match press conference, saying his next chance will be in January.

Now, it has been reported by The Athletic the reason Glasner sent Holding to train with the youth teams.

It is explained that after Holding was an unused substitute against West Ham, he was concerned about being asked to partake in a post-match running session.

Holding was worried about picking up an injury and questioned Glasner, before ultimately taking part in the session. Subsequently, Glasner asked him to instead train with the U21.

Where Crystal Palace No.4 fits in

When Holding signed for Crystal Palace last summer, the club was at a very different point and he was expected to be a solid addition from Arsenal.

Fast forward one year and Holding is likely ninth or lower in the pecking order, which makes it surprising that he was retained in the summer.

He is unlikely to play for Crystal Palace again and his transfer will forever go down as being a flop. Hopefully Holding is a move which Dougie Freedman learns from and we don’t face similar issues in the future.
