Crystal Palace were interested in signing 20-year-old defender Ronnie Edwards last month from Peterborough United.

The January transfer window had a rollercoaster end for Crystal Palace with late signings being the highs while missing out on others was the low.

Adam Wharton and Daniel Munoz both joined in the last few days of the transfer window which was a pleasant surprise considering many had accepted a signingless window.

On deadline day, Maxwel Cornet came close to joining on loan but ultimately West Ham couldn’t sign a replacement and Palace ended the window there. But weeks earlier, Palace were keen to bring £10m defender Ronnie Edwards to the club.

This was a continuation of long-term interest from Palace stretching back to 2022. Now though it’s been explained by the Peterborough chairman, why Edwards stayed at Posh for the remainder of this season.

Why Ronnie Edwards didn’t join Crystal Palace in January

Palace may have missed out on signing the talented England youth star in January but now Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has explained he wasn’t going to sell Edwards anyway.

While recounting the January window on the latest episode of The Hard Truth podcast, he mentioned that a Championship side had come in for the 20-year-old on deadline day.

To this, he immediately responded: “I said No. I’ll do Ronnie in the summer, I was just like no, this is too late in the day.”

This however seems to be a clear indication that the ‘fantastic‘ centre-half is going to be available come the summer.

How is Ronnie Edwards playing this season?

This season for Posh, Edwards has started 30 games and in doing so has been seriously impressive at a League One level. An average match rating of 7.25 on SofaScore perfectly showcases just how brilliant he has been.

His on-ball play has been very solid with a 91% passing rate which rises to 95% when he’s in his own half. Along with these, he’s created two big chances.

Defensively he’s helped keep 10 clean sheets while averaging 11.6 defensive actions per game.

As a right footer and with his clear qualities, he could be seen as a long-term replacement for someone like Joachim Andersen.
