Oliver Glasner issues defence for Crystal Palace summer signing after “unfair” criticism

Things have not been going to plan for Crystal Palace this season with the summer signings yet to make a substantial impact.

Oliver Glasner’s pre-season ambitions of European football now look completely foolish as the run of form the Eagles are putting together would instead see relegation look a sure thing.

Crystal Palace sit 18th in the Premier League after six games this season. It is this start which has seen the Eagles now discussed alongside other relegation contenders.

Opta has handed Crystal Palace a 10.10% chance of being relegated, with five teams viewed as more likely the Eagles should be okay.

Amid the bad run of results, many fans have had complaints about Daichi Kamada, but now Glasner has given his summer signing some support.

Oliver Glasner backs Daichi Kamada

Kamada was signed in the summer for free, and there was plenty of excitement at the time over the kind of player the Eagles were getting.

The Japanese international impressed in pre-season for Crystal Palace. However, during one training match, he was seen playing in the double pivot.

Since the season started, he has been deployed in this role and has failed to impress in doing so, often being outmuscled and out thought which has at times led to trouble for the Eagles.

Speaking in his pre-Liverpool press conference, Kamada received backing from Glasner. This will likely be huge in helping the midfielder regain some confidence after a rocky start.

“We have confidence in every single player in our squad – we can’t listen to what outsiders think. It’s really unfair to say one guy is responsible for a loss or a win.”

Glasner backing Kamada is expected, although it is also encouraging to see as really he is spot on and is right to call up fans who are treating Kamada as the sole issue.

Glasner rates Kamada highly; therefore, Crystal Palace fans cannot write him off yet with the Austrian backing him.

Crystal Palace team news vs Liverpool

Kamada was not the only subject matter in Glasner’s press conference, with plenty of team news also shared by the Austrian manager.

Glasner revealed that Brazilian gem Matheus Franca remains out and with a new injury, could actually be out until 2025 at the earliest – a huge blow for the youngster.

Glasner admitted that “nobody is close to coming back” from injury, but he did have some updates on Cheick Doucoure.

“It’s possible he [Doucoure] joins training in the second week of the international break,” said Glasner.

Adam Wharton expected to withdraw from England U21 duty

Much to the annoyance of many, Adam Wharton was called up by England U21.

However, Glasner has revealed that he expects the midfielder to return to Copers Cope as he is not fit.

“We’re in talks with the U21s. He will go there to have a medical assessment.

“We expect that he comes back again because he struggles and he is still struggling.

“It’s about managing him as good as possible. We know it’s not a good situation. It could help if the England U21s support Adam as well.”
